We Are Young on How to be A Good Catholic

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

This is the chorus of the song We Are Young by Fun. featuring Janelle Monae.  I chose to represent my creed with this specific verse, aside from being my favorite part of the song, is because of different brilliant meanings it may bring.  I will explain it line by line, and then I will further explain after why it could show how a good Catholic should be.

“Tonight”
For some, this time indicator might not matter but during this moment, most of the people, disregarding people who work on graveyard shift, are resting.  Imagine it that during nights, everything is so calm and silent, as if nothing is actually wrong.  The people who are resting at night are simply waiting for the sun to rise so they could start to work again.  These people are simply waiting for this sun, which rose and set yesterday, to rise again on that day.  Nothing seems special aside from having another day to work, to live, to do whatever these people want to do.

“We are young”
The way I described the people on the previous paragraph refers to people who work.  These people are the kinds of people who think nothing is wrong that they would follow a routine everyday so just not to disturb the flow of their lives.
Now, here comes the youth, which could be called as teenagers, young adults, etc.  These youth make changes to the calm society as they find themselves in this course of life.  Because of their search for who they really are, they are the ones who can see what is wrong with the current society they belong.

“So let’s set the world on fire”
I see “fire” as a symbol for social change.  Because of the different injustices in the society, there is a need to set the fire within the darkness that makes the people blind of the real situation of their society.

“We can burn brighter than the sun”
With these collaborated efforts for social change, people can now start look for a brighter sun every after night.

How does this relate to Theology?
If we go back to the readings on Job, God has 2 languages: mystical and prophetic.  Mystical language refers to God’s love for us, while prophetic language refers to God’s requirements for us to do justice.

This is what God wants us to do, to do justice, to eradicate injustices.  However, the Church has kept on saying “God wants this…God wants that…” just to have control over the entire Catholic community.  Just as discussed during the last lectures, the Church keeps on putting everything above the line, not just things regarding what to prepare during Holy Communion and the like, but also the concerns on the real situation of the society.  Because of this, our real job as Catholics is somehow being forgotten.

In my metaphors of the chorus, the Church says that everything will be okay if we follow what they are saying, but I doubt if they see the real situation of the society.  I do not say that what they are doing is wrong but they lack immersion on the real situation of the world.  As good Catholics, we are tasked to look for these injustices and solve it.  We are the “youth” who can bring a brighter tomorrow in the society, all for the love of God.

If I were to rephrase the verse, how would it be?
ORIGINAL LYRICS
CREED
Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
In this time when we are blind to see what is real,
As a good Catholic,
I will be the light of the society, eradicating the injustices.
Together, we can create the change that the world wanted

So does it mean that we should not follow the Church's teachings?
No.  What I mean is that we have to be critical on what the Church is asking as to do.  If we have to work beyond the limits that the Church creates, we have to, as long as we are doing our task of doing good to others, together with good intentions for the betterment of society that God has created.

Final Words
Just like the youth portrayed in the song, we, as Catholics, have to be proactive and bold enough to go beyond the limits.  If we continue to box ourselves with merely what the Church is asking us to do, we will not be as good and effective Catholics as what our society needs.  We need to “burn brighter than the sun” in order for justice to be spread among God’s creations.

Listen to the song!

Hmm..This is Kinda Weird

Hello everyone!

Today is the last day for us, running a position in the Executive Board in MISA, to campaign for ourselves (duh?!)

Next week will be MISA's Voting Period and also, it's the voting period for the Sanggunian as well. Goodluck to all the candidates! :D

Just this morning, my sleep was disturbed by a message beep from my phone.  I received a message from a friend telling that my campaign material is in the Crystal Eagle (and how he described the blog is that it is a hate blog that entertains him LOL).  Anyway, so here's the catch.  I have a post here about my conversation with Cate Sison, which was used as a source by this Crystal Eagle.  Am I even that reliable to be used as a source?  This blog is to share my personal opinions.  If Crystal Eagle concluded that Cate is a user through my post, I think there is something wrong with that.

I, in any way, is not related with Crystal Eagle.  Perhaps, her stalking skills are DAMN LEVEL ASIAN that she reached my little world (blog).  I have nothing against her posts, neither praises to her posts.  And to have my campaign material, which eventually turned to be my header for this blog, posted there has no reason at all. Not to have many hits, not to gain fame, and most especially, not to campaign for myself.

Well, I must have been paranoid when my friend told me about this. C'mon! Wouldn't you be paranoid if that's the first thing you meet in the morning? LOL

Anyway, the only positive thing I see here is that my hits went up (hurrah!).  However, I think they just went here because of Crystal Eagle's reference. :))

It seems that we have an Ateneo Gossip Girl here :))

P.S. I'm going to change my banner again tonight since we are not allowed to campaign anymore this week ;)

Busy October Has Passed

Yes. October has passed and I haven't made a single post for that month. Sad :(

Anyway, here is a rundown of events that happened on my October 2011.

October was a very busy month for me.  The first two weeks marked the busiest days in a college semester - the week before the finals week, and the finals week itself.

When it comes to the result of my hardwork for this semester, well, I managed to pass my History and Filipino subjects. I was really glad about it especially for my Asian History course because my pre-final grade was an F or failing mark.  I was really happy that I, at least, barely passed my weakness subjects.  For this semester, I got a QPI of 2.42, which is way down than my previous QPI. Sad :(

This was the time when I shouted for joy! My Hi16 was marked P or Passed! :D

My  grade spells ADDOBBO and a C+.
As the first two weeks of my semestral break, I was busy for trainings and seminars.  From October 17 to 21, I went to Code-Over Training Session.  It was a 5-day training for the Associate of Computing Machinery - International Collegiate Programming Competition (ACM-ICPC).  It was held on Subic (I forgot the exact location) and all-expenses paid by our department, the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science.  Surprisingly, I was the only Management Information Systems (MIS) major in the training.  The training is composed of 7 contest-like sessions to simulate the contest environment of the ACM-ICPC.  Every after contest, we discussed how to answer the problem set.

From October 24 to 28, I attended the AIESEC National Leadership Development Conference.  This was my first time to attend a national conference of AIESEC and I enjoyed it a lot.  I learned a lot of stuff here and my doubts regarding the placement of AIESEC AdMU in Business Cluster were answered.  The conference were attended by different delegates from LCs, extensions, and applying LCs, including delegates from Myanmar, Singapore, and Japan, plus foreign facilitators from AIESEC Taiwan, AIESEC Malaysia and AIESEC Sri Lanka.  We had the Externals Day on Oct. 24, where there were talks about Innovation, Social Entrepreneurship, and Leadership.  On the second day, we reviewed everything about AIESEC and introduced to us the AIESEC 2015, including the 3 Wheels of Change, the BHAG, etc.  At night, we had our local version of Global Village, the Fiesta Night, where different LCs presented delicacies and performance about the different provinces here in the Philippines.  Our group were assigned for Quezon Province. I did the design of the booth. Unluckily, we failed to get the best booth design. At least we all enjoyed, especially the lambanog. =D
Wazzap with my face? ROFL.
When people tried Quezon Province's Lambanog :>

On the following days, we had trainings from controlling a team and coaching, to writing a good job description for EPs.  In my part, I learned how a business model canvass works in an AIESEC context, plus market segmentation, expansion, and risk management.
While doing a TN Form for a fictional EP. Happy me + happy Jiggy
Anong meron at ang taray ng itsura ko dito? O_O
During the market segmentation talk. THAT'S ME! Behing Nicky! :D
During the nights, we had celebrations. For the third night, we had a pageant night and on the fourth, we had the Captain's Gala Night.

What's in the First Half of September 2011?

It's been a long time since I posted my previous post. Anyway, the first half of this month is very full of happy memories and I want to share these here. By the way, pictures are to follow, mkay? :-)

So where should I begin? I guess I'd begin with the Rhythm In Blues, the inter-organization dance competition in the Ateneo organized by none other than the Company of Ateneo Dancers (CADS).  I joined the dance group of Ateneo Special Education Society (Ateneo SPEED), Sproove.  For this year, the theme of the RIB is Kalye. We actually got in for the elimination round, placing 9th out of 12 organizations accepted to proceed to the finals.  Last night, September 17, was the finals round of the said competition and luckily, we hit the 3rd place spot in the organization.  I am really happy about this since this is the first ever dance competition I've joined (well I've been dancing in my elementary and high school days but not for a competition, tho).  As our choreographers, Aye Alba and Sam Abriza, had said, "Ang edge niyo sa ibang grupo ay walang natural dancers sa inyo. Lahat kayo nagsimula na hindi marunong pero heto kayo nakapasok sa finals na maraming magagaling at maraming matagal nang nagsasayaw." (Disclaimer: It's non-verbatim but that's the sense of what they said.) Of course, with the guidance and will of God, this won't be possible.  I was also happy that MISAyaw, the dance group of my other organization, Ateneo Management Information Systems Association (Ateneo MISA) qualified for the finals also but unfortunately, they didn't manage to hit a spot in top 3. But that doesn't mean they're not good. THEY'RE SO MUCH BETTER THAN US. Most of them really danced before and their piece was so clean and nice. Well I really have no idea why they didn't manage to hit a spot but kudos to MISAyaw for doing a great job! *two thumbs up* Well among all these, I am very thankful to Sproove (and SPEED as well) for giving me a chance to dance (and move my stagnant body HAHA XD). Sproove has been a gateway that gives me a chance to dance (well, there's a part in me that is a frustrated dancer). Thanks to our choreographers as well for believing, not just in me, but to the entire dance group. Thanks to my co-dancers (I repeat, dancers, not co-members. We're dancers na you know) for allowing me to join the group HAHA. Also, thank you to SPEED and my other friends who keeps on supporting me and the dance group. Lastly, above all these, I thank God for His will. Without Your guidance, we might not have shot a spot in the top 3.

The next highlight of this month was no other than my 18th birthday celebration. I have already crossed the legal age. I don't know if it's actually a good thing or a bad thing but all I do know is that I have more responsibilities now, not just in myself, in our home, in school, but also in our country. I'll be a registered voter this week (well it's not being me excited but it's one of the requirements for our NSTP) and this will exercise my voting rights as a citizen of this country. Other than these, what happened during the night of September 10 and the dawn of September 11 was very epic. I celebrated my birthday with my high school friends and my dad (who just arrived last September 8 from Singapore) bought all our alcoholic drinks. I don't know if he supports my "thirst for alcohol" but I'm very happy on that day. On the morning of September 11, I went to Eastwood to attend the Information Management Conference entitled IMmensity: Beyond Bounds, organized by Ateneo MISA. Well, I destroyed my dignity by acting as Vannah Pacis (under the pseudonym of Vananah Pacis) but I enjoyed and I hope the audience enjoyed as well. At night, I ate dinner in Eastwood with my dad, my little brother, and my two cousins. We ate at Sizzling Pepper Steak and then we drank a bottle of drinks just to have a chilling moment. The day was so tiring that when I got home, I slept immediately.

Well, tomorrow might be one of the low points of this month since my room/my house will be as empty again as before my dad came. Well, being mature enough, I must not be sad by this event but, seriously, I miss this thing. I went home with my dad waiting for me (or at least someone whom I can talk with is waiting for me). My dad woke me up in the morning so I won't be late in my classes. He prepared my breakfast as well. I had someone whom I can talk to at home. Everything's not so dull. Of course as he leaves tomorrow, everything will be back to normal. I go to school with an empty stomach, either too early or too late for my first classes. I go home with my brother waiting for me silently. I'm going to do my stuff on the laptop. I feel like I'm gonna cry right now as I write this portion of my blog but I cannot escape this truth. Well all I can say is that we need to learn to love the truth so we won't be hurt so much. Yeah, truth hurts. But if we truly accepted it and go with the flow of its momentum, it won't have much impact on us anymore.

On the lighter note, I guess there is a need for me to sleep HAHA. My joints hurt. My muscles ache. But I still feel that I don't need to sleep. Well, I guess I have to force myself by now. Oh by the way, I'll be changing phone and number by tomorrow so watch out! :D
