The Star: A Symbol of Hope Or A Sign of Destruction?

For our Literature class (Introduction to Fiction), we have started talking about science fiction genre.  Our professor asked us to read The Star by Arthur Clarke and The Last Question by Isaac Asimov.  The discussion for The Star has started this morning.

The story is about a space voyage of a Jesuit astrophysicist.  Their mission is to investigate nebulae and supernovas.  When they reached a certain space body, the Jesuit adored the beauty the civilization had made and the team had identified this vault with instructions on how to open it.  They found records about the civilization.  As they went back to Earth, the Jesuit tried to solve when did the supernova exploded and when the light had reached the Earth.  To his surprise, that supernova was the Star of Bethlehem.

To start the discussion, our professor gave us questions to ponder:

  1. What makes you “you”?
  2. How does what you believe make you “you”?
  3. What or who is God for the people in your life?
  4. What roles does faith play in your life?
  5. What do you believe in?
Would you like to answer these questions? :)
