Give It A Bang With Grenade

For a man who sang "Just The Way You Are", it would be really awful for him not to reciprocate his love. Bruno Mars had given us another music video that brings visuality that will surely take a bullet straight through our brains.

"Today, I get to share with you the visual companion piece to my new single, 'Grenade.' The song is about loving someone so deeply, and the pain of knowing that the person you love does not feel the same. The actions in this video serve as a metaphor, and should not be taken literally. I am aware of the power of visual media, and I encourage everyone who watches this video to understand that it is an artistic interpretation of the song, and not something to imitate." -- Bruno Mars, November 2010

Grenade has full of sad emotions unlike his two first singles - Just The Way You Are and Marry You. As I have listened to the song many times, the lyrics expresses the persona's griefs and sacrifices for an unrequited love. The song has so much heartbreak that everyone who experience love can relate (even me!).

Two colors were said in the song - the black and the blue. Black symbolizes darkness and blue symbolizes sadness. Darkness and sadness give the dominant impression of the song, adding to the beat of the drums and the Bruno's voice that make the persona pitiful.

In the music video, Bruno dragged his piano all the way to the girl's house, experiencing different situations such as being bullied by street gangs and pit bull. What I think here is that after courting the girl (with his song Just The Way You Are), now he is suffering with the situation of unrequited love. He is trying to court the girl again with the use of his piano (which he keeps on dragging in the music video). The piano may symbolize all his efforts for the girl as he like to express all things he would do just for her. When he found out that the girl has another man already, he dragged his piano to the railroad and took a suicide, just as how his efforts and he is crashed and dumped by the girl.

Now why is "Grenade" the title of the song? A grenade is actually a bomb that explodes after a very few seconds it is activated (usually by opening a hatch on top of it). When I looked through the lines, the grenade may actually serve two sides: a grenade that will surely kill the persona once he catch it, and a grenade that can kill the girl who dumped him. The grenade can actually symbolize all his sacrifices for the girl. As if he will kill himself just for the girl. At the same time, a nature of human is to seek revenge for something which makes the grenade to be a weapon against the girl. If she dumped him at an instant, he can dump her too at an instant. Who knows? The next song after Just The Way You Are and Grenade is the song Fuck You by Cee-lo Green :))

I will give the song a 4 out of 5 rating because the song was successful in giving out the message (the message is explicitly said). Moreover, I will give the music video a 4.5 out of 5 rating because of it adds spice to the message of the song.

The video is posted below if you would like to take a look on it.
